Milford track packages11/9/2023 On occasion, wet weather may make conditions more challenging when puddles or streams may be encountered. There are some areas where terrain is rocky or rough underfoot. Some fitness required, walking pace set around 3 km per hour, 50 metre vertical gain, 11 km walk total, walking time aproximately 3.5 hours. We provide a professional nature guide, water taxi transport from Deep Water Basin to Sandfly Point, Milford Track and return, safety gear, and hot drinks. Bring lunch with you or preorder a packed lunch. Rain jackets are available if requested prior to the day of travel. We also recommend you have a change of clothes and dry shoes in case it is a wet day. Jeans and street wear are not suitable clothing, please ensure you wear suitable outdoor, active wear for the walks. What to Bring - we recommend guests bring comfortable walking shoes, day pack containing warm top (synthetic or wool), waterproof jacket, warm hat and gloves, insect repellent, snack food and camera. If you have selected our transport option for the Milford Track Guided Walk, we will collect you from your Te Anau accommodation so please be ready waiting for us outside at 6.30 am good to go! Please note on most occasions you will need to wait at Milford Sound while the group cruises on the fiord. There is no cell phone coverage after Te Anau Downs, including at Milford Sound. The Milford Road is steep, windy and narrow in places - less confident drivers should consider taking the transport option. From here it is a 20 minute walk to the main terminal building where we meet you. We recommend you be at Milford Parked up by 8.00 am if you wish to have free parking. On Deepwater Basin Road there is free parking on a gravel carpark. The cost is set at $20 for up to 5 hours, and there is an additional flat rate of $20 for staying beyond 5 hours. Milford Sound Tourism has implemented paid parking in the main Milford carparks. Milford Sound is a recommended 2 hour drive from Te Anau plus you need to allow time to park, so we recommend a 6.00 am departure from Te Anau. You will meet your guide at the Mitre Peak Cruise counter in the Main Visitors Terminal at Fresh Water Basin. If you have selected to depart from Milford Sound, meet your Trips & Tramps guide at 8.30 am. We recommend you bring hiking snacks with you and a reusable bottle of water. Stay in Te Anau the night before you intend to travel, and you will wake up fresh and ready to begin your walk into Fiordland National Park. The Hollyford Track begins/ends at The Hollyford Road End, which is a two-hour drive from Te Anau towards Milford Sound. It is essential to enquire about the conditions of the route with the Department of Conservation before starting your trip on the Hollyford Track. The Pyke-Big Bay Route provides a round trip, but is not well defined in places and should only be attempted by very experienced and well-equipped parties. Visitors would need to carry a portable stove/cooker with them. Huts operate on a first-come, first-served basis and provide basic facilities such as fireplaces, mattresses, and pit toilets. Backcountry Hut Tickets are required to stay in the huts or to camp, and these can be purchased from the Department of Conservation. There are six DOC huts on the Hollyford Track available for trampers, and camping with a tent is allowable next to the huts. Hikers can explore the serenity of Lake Alabaster, witness the awe-inspiring sight of Humboldt Falls, and experience the deep solitude of the Hollyford Valley. The track winds its way through ancient beech forests, alongside cascading waterfalls, and along the shores of stunning lakes. This 56-kilometre-long trail takes hikers on a captivating journey from the snow-capped peaks of the Southern Alps to the rugged and remote West Coast. The Hollyford Track in Fiordland is a pristine wilderness trail that offers an unforgettable journey through some of the country's most breathtaking landscapes.
